Top 4 Pre-Travel Tips

Emotions run the gamut when it comes to preparing for a trip–from excited, to overwhelmed to just plain stressed out!  Sometimes no matter how far in advance you begin preparing, there is always some last minute detail to worry about.  From making sure everything gets packed, to remembering your flight details, passport, etc, traveling can be quite nerve-wracking.   It can even get the best of us travelers.  Where I’m headed and my travel mood of the moment, also greatly effects how I handle my travels.  This got Zeis and I thinking about what would make the pre-travel better.  We each shared things we actually do before a trip and some things we would should really do more of the night before or morning of an upcoming trip.  (Let’s just assume we’ve left proscrastination off the to do list).  We understand that some of the tips below may not be feasible.  We know you’ve all got a lot on your plate and time can often be a luxury, but perhaps you can take away one or two of these tips and make your next voyage smooth sailing.

 1.  Keep Calm
Perhaps easier said than done but not impossible.  We know there’s late hours at work trying to wrap everything up before you get to forget it all for a week or even just a long weekend, the less than pleasant commute, last minute stuff like packing, paying bills, etc, etc, etc but it is possible to keep calm.  It can be as simple as just remembering to breathe.  As someone who needs a lot of guidance in this area, breathing really helps to keep you present (and calm).  Try it.

2. Get Your Drink On
Yes, we know, you probably would love a glass of red wine right about now but we were thinking more along the lines of tea.  Chamomile tea to be exact.  The night before your travels, drink some chamomile tea to help get you in relaxation, vacation mode.  You’ll be sleeping like a baby before you know it….zzzz.

3.  Soak it Up
Before you go to bed the night before your flight, get cozy with a warm bath.  Make it a bubble bath and add a glass of wine if you’e like.  Really pamper yourself.  Add some relaxing lavender salts and just enjoy the ride.  (This one is on Zeis’ to do list for our next adventure)

4.  Start Vacation Early
One of the things I have always enjoyed about preparing for a trip was really getting into the country.  What I mean by that is really getting myself excited and learning as much as I could about a place, its people and its culture.  I am a sucker for books and reading stories that take place in faraway lands as well as reading expat stories are probably some of my favorite ways to get inspired.  It’s so easy to get caught up in our It helps me to feel like I’m already there before I’ve even boarded my flight.

5.  Hit the Mat
Yes my friends, yoga.  We think this one is pretty straightforward but if not, I’ll break it down for you.  Yoga has been my savior on these cold winter days so why not give it a try?  Nothing too crazy but just enough to get those muscles stretched and that breath flowing.  (More to come on yoga and travel soon.)
