It’s been a very long winter, probably one of the longest winters I can remember. Zeis and I returned to New York mid January and we have had the pleasure of a snow storm every week and freezing weather to match. Needless to say, we have spent much of our time bundled up inside our apartment. Now that spring is finally here, or at least officially here, it’s got me thinking of why spring is such a welcome season and with my wanderlust kicks in. I’ve got Marrakech on my mind.
Spring in Marrakech is probably one of the best times to be there. You can probably say that about many places in spring but it is especially true in Marrakech. Spring is a time for re-birth and you definitely begin to feel it and sense it all around you. The winter rain and chill has passed and the summer heat has not yet arrived. Marrakech is always a lively city but a different kind of life seems to come back into the city in the spring. The beautiful and brightly colored bougainvillea flowers begin to bloom. All over the city you will see the rich colors of orange, fuschia and bright purple as these flowers just creep and crawl and make everything that much more beautiful and that much more colorful.
The breeze is cool and crisp. The smell of orange blossoms wafts in through your windows and it couldn’t be lovelier. I would often see women sitting around the orange blossoms as they collected them for tea. The small children would do the same. Strolling through the medina becomes so much more enjoyable when the sun isn’t beating down on you. Walking through the Majorelle Garden is doubly as lovely. Spring is the perfect time for home-cooked outdoor meals with friends. Bottles of Gris or the Moroccan version of rose. Views of the stars and the quiet make some of the best dining companions. Road trips outside of the city are ideal in spring. Getting on a mobilette and just taking a drive around is one of those freeing experiences that should be experienced. Driving around the hill towns and along the windy roads which allow for some pretty incredible views are even more incredible in spring. And though we won’t be in Marrakech this spring, it’s always nice to have those springtime memories.
