The one thing that Zeis and I love most about Barcelona is the city’s architecture. Barcelona is a mix of new and old, modern and contemporary….in some cases it’s difficult to tell the old apart from the modern. The work of the famous architect Antonio Gaudi, is a perfect example of this. When I first visited Barcelona many years ago, the thing that most left an impression on me was the Gaudi monuments. It was like nothing I had ever seen in other cities. During this trip, on one of our drives through the city, Zeis had a bit of a surprise for me. Up to this point I had not seen any of the Gaudi sites so when all of a sudden he told me to look to my right and right there, about 30 feet away stood the Sagrada Familia. Wow, what a sight! It was as beautiful as I had remembered, maybe even more beautiful. It’s amazing to think that such a grand piece of work stands right in the middle of a city and the most incredible thing is that the basilica is that the work is far from complete. Sadly, Gaudi never got to see his completed masterpiece……the huge task is scheduled for completion in 2025!
Another of Gaudi’s works of art is Park Guell. Zeis was lucky enough to have been born and raised near Park Guell located in the Gracia neighborhood. Zeis knows the park inside and out. There is an oval shaped plaza, the largest point inside the park with views of the entire city….you can even see the Barceloneta. A trip to Barcelona is not complete unless you have seen some or better yet, all of the work by Gaudi.
